When you are brushing the outside surfaces of your teeth, it is best to position the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gumline. Begin by gently moving the brush in a circular motion with small, gentle strokes for two minutes. Use some pressure, but not so much that you feel discomfort. Make sure to get the bristles between the teeth, on the biting surface of teeth and along the gumline on the cheek as well as the tongue side. To clean the inside surfaces of the front teeth on the top and bottom, hold the toothbrush vertically making several gentle back and forth strokes over each tooth. Remember to also carefully brush the surrounding gum tissue.

When brushing, try to watch yourself in the mirror and make sure that you clean each surface of your tooth.  Change then position of the brush as often as necessary to  reach and clean all surfaces. After you are done, rinse vigorously to remove any plaque you may have loosened when brushing.

If you experience any pain with brushing or other oral hygiene practices, or if you have any questions about proper technique, please be sure to call the office.
